MD 0132 Image

Mesoscale Discussion 0132
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1048 PM CST Mon Jan 23 2017

Areas affected...Portions of Maine...VT...NH...and northeastern NY

Concerning...Winter mixed precipitation

Valid 240448Z - 241045Z

SUMMARY...Areas of winter mixed precipitation will continue to
spread northward during the overnight hours into early Tuesday
morning.

DISCUSSION...Areas of sleet, freezing rain, and snow -- addressed in
Mesoscale Discussion 131 -- will continue to spread northward across
portions of New England and northeast NY through the overnight hours
and continue into early Tuesday morning. This winter mixed
precipitation has already become widespread across portions of
central and eastern New York into adjacent parts of western New
England -- in association with the warm conveyor and deformation
structures accompanying a deep cyclone advancing northward near the
Atlantic Coast. In many areas, temperatures marginally above
freezing within an elevated warm layer -- e.g., sampled by the 00Z
Albany sounding -- and notably elevated dendritic growth zones
(relative to the strongest ascent in the profile) will support sleet
and freezing rain, given sub-freezing wet-bulb surface temperatures
across the area. Freezing-rain rates around 0.02-0.04 inch per hour,
and sleet-accumulation rates locally reaching around 0.05-0.10 inch
per hour, will be possible. Deeper cold air/subfreezing profiles may
tend to favor snow in some areas -- e.g., from parts of northeast NY
eastward toward central Maine. Snowfall rates of 0.5 inch to locally
1 inch per hour may accompany this activity.
