MD 0135 CONCERNING HEAVY SNOW FOR PORTIONS OF FAR NORTHERN IA...FAR SOUTHERN MN...FAR SOUTHWEST WI
MD 0135 Image

Mesoscale Discussion 0135
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0456 PM CST Tue Jan 24 2017

Areas affected...Portions of far northern IA...far southern MN...far
southwest WI

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 242256Z - 250400Z

SUMMARY...A band of heavy snow will continue to become established
and edge northward through the evening hours, with snowfall rates
reaching around 1 inch per hour.

DISCUSSION...Satellite and radar imagery, and surface observations,
suggest that a midlevel deformation zone, and related zonally
elongated shield of moderate to locally heavy snow, are
consolidating across far northern IA. This activity is also being
supported by incipient warm-advection-related precipitation farther
south, and lies ahead of a vorticity maximum crossing eastern NE.
The deformation zone will gradually edge northward in tandem with
vorticity-maximum-preceding poleward mass fluxes. As such, the
leading edge of related banded snow will slowly shift into far
southern MN in the 2330Z-0100Z time frame. The progression of the
vorticity maximum should allow this activity to advance into far
southwest WI after 0300Z. Adequate frontogenetic ascent embedded
within the deformation zone will favorably intersect saturated
dendritic growth zones aloft in support of snowfall rates to 1 inch
per hour. This activity will likely persist into the evening
hours -- perhaps into the overnight hours especially toward the
vicinity of the Mississippi River.
