Mesoscale Discussion 0027
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0711 AM CST Sat Jan 07 2017
Areas affected...Southeastern VA...Delmarva Peninsula
Concerning...Heavy snow
Valid 071311Z - 071715Z
SUMMARY...A band of heavy snowfall is expected from southeastern VA
northeastward into the Delmarva peninsula. Snowfall rates of 2
inches per hour are possible.
DISCUSSION...Low-level southeasterly flow is expected to continue to
increase just off the northeastern NC/southeastern VA coast as the
shortwave trough approaching the region continues to mature. The
resulting increase in warm-air advection/frontogenesis will support
heavy snowfall. Current observations reveal heavy snowfall is
already underway across southeastern VA and the expectation is for
the band across this area to become better organized over the next
hour or two, with heavy snowfall expanding northeastward into the
Delmarva peninsula. Recent RAP guidance progs OPRH values from -1.5
to -2 across the region, suggesting snowfall rates near 2 inch per
hour are likely. This is supported by the recent NGU observation,
which reported 2 inches in the last hour.
