MD 0060 CONCERNING FREEZING RAIN FOR EAST-CENTRAL INTO NORTHEASTERN NEBRASKA
MD 0060 Image

Mesoscale Discussion 0060
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1021 AM CST Mon Jan 16 2017

Areas affected...East-central into northeastern Nebraska

Concerning...Freezing rain

Valid 161621Z - 162215Z

SUMMARY...Freezing rain is expected to continue over parts of
east-central into northeast Nebraska today, with localized rates in
excess of 0.05"/hr.

DISCUSSION...Surface analysis shows the wet-bulb zero line near or
just northwest of Omaha, and extending southwestward into north
central KS as of 16Z. Meanwhile, a broad band of precipitation
currently persists across the entire area, extending eastward across
IA in a broad zone of warm advection just above the surface.

As the upper trough and surface low continue northeastward across
KS, surface winds across eastern NE should back a bit, helping
temperatures to remain near or just below freezing via cold
advection. This may help to counteract any warming from rain aloft
and rising/saturating surface dewpoints. Radar trends and model
output are in good agreement depicting an area of relatively longer
precipitation duration northwest of the low track, and west of the
dry slot, centered over northeastern NE. Precipitation may
changeover to snow toward the end of the event, especially over
western parts of the MCD area.
