Mesoscale Discussion 0606
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0125 AM CDT Sun Apr 30 2017
Areas affected...Portions of western KS...southeastern CO...far
northeastern NM...the TX/OK Panhandles...and far southwestern NE
Concerning...Heavy snow
Valid 300625Z - 301230Z
SUMMARY...A developing band of heavy snow with rates around 1 inch
per hour will likely persist through at least 12Z. Localized
blizzard conditions will be possible with strong northerly surface
winds.
DISCUSSION...Ongoing moderate to locally heavy snowfall is expected
to consolidate into a band of heavy snowfall across western KS and
vicinity over the next several hours. An upper low centered over the
TX Panhandle as of 06Z will continue northeastward overnight into
northwestern OK and southern KS. Strong low to mid-level
frontogenesis across the discussion area and related large-scale
forcing for ascent will promote the development of this heavy snow
band. 00Z soundings from Amarillo TX and Dodge City KS modified for
current surface observations and RAP forecast soundings both
indicate a saturated profile through the dendritic growth zone. The
strong lift associated with the upper low will likely support
snowfall rates around 1 inch per hour within the band, with locally
higher rates possible. In addition, an enhanced surface pressure
gradient across this region is promoting strong northerly sustained
winds of 20-40 mph, with higher gusts. This may lead to localized
blizzard conditions, mainly across western KS. The heavy snow band
should develop northeastward into parts of far southwestern NE
through 12Z as the upper low continues northeastward.
