Mesoscale Discussion 0612
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0912 AM CDT Sun Apr 30 2017
Areas affected...Western KS...Southwest NE
Concerning...Heavy snow
Valid 301412Z - 301915Z
SUMMARY...Heavy snowfall, with rates from 1 to 2 inches per hours,
will persist for at least the next several hours across portions of
western KS and southwest NE.
DISCUSSION...Regional radar imagery and recent surface observations
show a band of heavy snow from southwest KS into far southwest NE.
The heaviest snowfall is currently across southern portions of
southwest KS near GCK and DDC. Water vapor satellite imagery readily
depicts a mature warm conveyor wrapping around the low (centered
over northwest OK) and the dry conveyor is depicted well also.
Forcing for ascent caused by the resulting isentropic ascent within
this warm conveyor and augmented by deformation will continue to
support heavy snowfall. The expectation throughout the remainder of
the morning and into the early afternoon is for the band of heavy
snowfall to persist while gradually shifting northward as the upper
low continues to mature and move slowly northeastward. Given the
strength of the forcing and ample moisture, snowfall rates of 1 to 2
inches per hour are likely.
