Areas affected...northwest KS...northeastern CO...and southwest NE

Concerning...Tornado Watch 490...

Valid 012243Z - 020045Z

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 490 continues.

SUMMARY...Scattered strong thunderstorms have developed across the
watch area, with large hail being reported. The hail threat will
continue for the next few hours, along with the possibility of
damaging wind gusts and a couple of tornadoes. A tornado watch
remains in effect.

DISCUSSION...Supercell thunderstorms continue to develop within the
watch area, where MLCAPE values are in excess of 2000 J/kg and
effective bulk shear ranges from 40-50 kt. These storms are expected
to continue for the next few hours. As the low-level jet begins to
increase toward sunset, low-level shear should increase, which may
increase the tornado potential, especially farther east where
low-level moisture is slightly better. However, large hail continues
to be the primary threat. Areas of south-central NE and
north-central KS are being monitored for a possible watch extension
or perhaps a new watch may be issued within the next few hours as
the storms move to the edge of the watch.
