On 16th October more than 100 people attended an excellent talk by BBC forecaster Peter Gibbs entitled ‘Blame it on the Weatherman’. He reflected on the ‘Great Storm’ of 1987 on the exact date of its thirtieth anniversary, by reviewing the scant forecast information as known at the time, and contrasting that with present day techniques used with hindsight. However, he remarked that despite improved scientific knowledge and remarkable computer modelling advances, it would still be challenge even now, to predict the most likely storm track and severity of the winds.
