Week ahead: Potentially severe storms - Rain and showers, Oct 27 - 07:48

Wind, rain and showers with a watch for severe storms, mild in the south Becoming increasing unsettled through the course of this week. There will be periods of rain and showers together with strong winds. The potential for severe gales on some days and there is the potential for rogue storms bringing extreme gusts of winds. Temperatures tending to be mild in the south, cooler in Scotland, then cooler for all next week. For the weather for the next few days click here

Friday 30/10/20 Another unsettled day on a Friday as a shallow area of low pressure crosses Ireland and the UK. This brings rain into Ireland and western parts of England and Wales through the morning, spreading eastwards through the afternoon although turning lighter and moe patchy. East Anglia and southeast England may stay dry although always some drizzle along southern coasts. Scotland will have some rain in the south but most other parts will be drier with sunny spells, apart from a few showers on western coasts. Highs at 16C in much of southern and eastern England, 14C in northwest England and Wales, 10 to 12C in Scotland and Ireland.

Saturday 31/10/20 A deep area of low pressure passing west of Ireland on Saturday will be bringing gale force winds to many areas, especially in the west. There will be clouds and periods of rain, most of it affecting Scotland, western England, Wales and Ireland. Eastern parts of England and Scotland are likely to see only patchy rain, although staying dry in the southeast until evening. Gales may become severe in Northern Ireland and western Scotland. A contrast in temperatures across the country with a mild 15 to 17C in much of England and Wales, but a cool 6 to 9C in Scotland.

Sunday 1/11/20 A wet day is likely for many on Sunday as fronts drive eastwards across the UK and Ireland. Rain could be heavy, mostly in the north and west. Brighter weather tending to arrive from the west through the day although with some heavy showers on western coasts and hills. More persistent rain could affect northern and western Scotland. Windy for many, gales in the northwest Scotland. Highs at 10 to 17C. Monday 2/11/20 Staying unsettled on Monday as low pressure brings severe gales and heavy rain to all areas. This passes north and east although conditions should be turning brighter in the west later. Highs at a cool 7 to 10C, but nearer 16C in the far southeast. Tuesday 3/11/20 A much cooler day for all on Tuesday with a mix of sunshine and showers. The showers will be heavy and thundery in the north and west with a risk of some hail too. Staying breezy. Highs at 9 to 12C. Wednesday 4/11/20 A ridge of higher pressure building on Wednesday. This should bring a drier day with sunny spells, although a few showers affecting northern and western coasts and hills. Highs at 9 to 13C.

Morning Call: Rain passing east - Brighter west, Oct 27 - 04:44

Rain spreading east, turning brighter in the west Rain in over the whole of Ireland and the west of Britain this morning. Drier in central and eastern Scotland as well as eastern England at first. Brighter and drier weather reaching western Ireland, a few showers here as well. The rain spreads east through this morning, reaching southern Scotland and eastern England. This afternoon sees the rain arriving in northern and eastern parts of Scotland. Damp in eastern England for a while. Brighter in Ireland and western parts of England and Wales as well as southwest Scotland, although a scattering of heavy showers developing. These more widespread in Ireland. Further showers, some of them heavy in western and southern areas tonight. Drier in the east with clearer spells. Breezy in Ireland, England and much of Wales.

Europe forecast: Breezy & wet west - Fair to the east, Oct 27 - 04:43

Windy with rain and showers in western France and northwest Spain, rain to in southern Italy Tuesday Dry and fine for much of Spain and Portugal again on Tuesday though cloud builds from the northwest and patchy outbreaks of rain develop here later. Early showers fade from the Balearic Islands leaving a dry and fine day here. Frequent showers, these locally quite heavy, affect Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and central and southern parts of Italy. Drier and bright for northern Italy. Dry and fine for Greece and Turkey though cloud builds over Greece later and a band of heavy rain may affect the far west by evening. A band of patchy rain spreads across France affecting most areas with the exception of the far southeast. Rain also spreads across the Low Countries and into the far northwest of Germany. Otherwise a dry and fair day for Germany and Switzerland. Early rain (snow over the Alps) fades over Austria and the Czech Republic while Poland has a rather cloudy day with isolated showers over western areas. Dry and mostly fine for eastern Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. Wet and increasingly windy for Denmark and southern parts of Norway and Sweden. Further north a band of heavy rain spreads northward over central and north Sweden and much of Finland, increasingly turning to snow as it approaches the Arctic Circle. Rather cloudy with scattered showers for the Baltic States with heavier, more persistent outbreaks of rain developing here later.

Wednesday Rain in northwest Spain and western Portugal on Wednesday. The rest of Spain should be dry with plenty of sunshine here. More sunshine to come through the Balearics. Italy will be bright and dry overall, although southern areas will have some heavy showers and more persistent rain. Thundery rain will be heavy in southern Greece and southwest Turkey. Much of the rest of Turkey will be dry with lots of sunshine. Winds, rain and showers in the north and west of France with a few showers in central areas. Drier in the south. Wet and windy in the Low Countries and the far north of Germany. Breezy in Poland and dry here with some sunny spells. Sunny spells and fair for Hungary, Austria and Switzerland. Windy with cloud and showery rain in Denmark. Fine with sunshine and windier weather in the Baltic States. Dry and breezy too with more sunny spells. Outbreaks of rain in the southern half of Sweden, but fair to the north. Further cloud and showers or outbreaks of rain in Norway.

UK Forecast: Rain for all - Brighter from west, Oct 26 - 14:19

Tuesday Starting dry in northern and eastern Scotland as well as eastern England early on Tuesday morning. Cloud and rain across Ireland and into western Scotland, western England, the Midlands and Wales will be passing quickly eastwards as the morning progresses. Drier and brighter weather will be following into Ireland from the west. During this afternoon rain will be mostly affecting eastern parts of Scotland and eastern England with the brighter, dry weather into western parts of the UK. Showers in Ireland some of them heavy. Breezy in the south. Becoming milder in southern areas at 15C, but just 10C in northern Scotland.

Tuesday night A breezy night for England, Wales and Ireland. Showers will be blowing onto western coasts sandhills, a few of them heavy and possibly thundery. More central and eastern parts will be drier under clear skies but will remain breezy. Lowest temperatures between 4 and 8C.

Wednesday Sunshine and showers are the order of the day for Wednesday. Most of the showers affecting western parts of the UK and Ireland. The showers may merge into longer spells of rain here and could bring some hail and thunder with them. These heavy showers affecting southern coasts of England too. Fewer showers in central and eastern areas which is where the best of any sunshine will be. It will be a breezy day for all. A coler day at 9 to 13C.

Thursday A brisk south-westerly flow will be affecting all parts of the UK and Ireland on Thursday. Rain will be spreading eastwards but the heaviest of this affecting western coasts and hills. Gales are likely in the west. Central and eastern Scotland is probably going to be dry at first, as will be the east of England. However, rain will be arriving here in the afternoon with the winds increasing. Highs at 10 to 15C.
