UK Forecast: Bright and cool - Rain returns in north-west, Jan 27 - 16:40

Thursday A brief ridge of high pressure brings sunny spells for England & Wales, most widespread in the morning. Central, east & southern regions stay dry all day. Cloud thickens from the west, bringing patchy rain to Irish Sea coasts. Northern Ireland soon turns wet, and showers across Scotland will deteriorate to persistent rain from the west by afternoon. Freshening south-westerly winds, later gales in the west. Starting cool, highs 7 to 9C.

Thursday night Rain continues for the north-west of Britain & Ireland, perhaps easing briefly, but is likely to intensify again overnight as further fronts spread off the Atlantic, heaviest over the western Scottish Highlands. Intermittent rain for north Wales & northern England, but mainly dry in the east, across the Midlands & southern Britain. Variable cloud, and increasingly windy, gales in the north. Temperatures staying around 6 to 9C.

Friday A windy day as low pressure to the north of Scotland produces a strong west to south-westerly pattern across the British Isles. A cold front over northern regions brings persistent rain to the west & north-west, some prolonged heavy falls across the hills. Elsewhere mainly dry, a little sun in the east and south. Later rain extends further across Wales, the south-west & into the Midlands. Mild for most, highs 9 to 12C.

Saturday A slow moving front is likely to produce persistent rain across southern Britain, which may become patchy for a time, then turn heavier again later from the south-west. Drier and brighter in north-east England. A chilly and showery day for north-west Britain & Ireland, and over Highland Scotland will give frequent snow or hail, particularly in west. Blustery westerly winds, gales around some coasts & hills. Highs 6C north, to 10C south.
