UK Forecast: Periods of rain - Windy but mild, Jan 25 - 16:13

Tuesday An area of low pressure (the remains of the USA snowstorm) moves quickly past northern Scotland during the day. Fronts sweep eastwards across the British Isles, bringing rain and gales, gusts over 60mph in exposed west. The heaviest rain will affect west & north-western areas. The south-east of England starts dry, with some early sun, but cloud will soon thicken. Rain spreads east into the afternoon, but becoming patchy. Mild, widely 10 to 12C.

Tuesday night Outbreaks of rain continue to affect southern Britain into the evening, whilst northern areas become dry. A lot of cloud across most areas. The wind will ease for a time, before freshening again from the south-west as further fronts spread in. Rain returns across Ireland, and extends to western Britain before dawn, becoming persistent. Coolest where skies briefly clear in the north-east, locally 3C, but for many it stays mild at 7 to 10C.

Wednesday A secondary low brings another series of fronts across Britain. Rain will be most persistent across England & Wales in the morning, heaviest toward the south-west, then clearing eastwards, followed by sunny spells and showers. Persistent rain across Scotland will also break up into showers, these turning wintry. Further gales around coasts and hills, will ease from the west by afternoon. Highs 10 to 13C, although cooler in northern Scotland.

Thursday A chilly start, with a slight frost in sheltered rural areas. A bright day, with a good deal of sunshine for much of England & Wales. The Midlands, south & east should stay largely dry. Showers are likely in the north & west of Britain and Ireland, perhaps merging into longer periods of rain through the day, heaviest in western Scotland, snow over the Highlands. Brisk west to south-westerly winds will feel cool. Temperatures 6 to 9C.
