Week ahead: Changeable - Most rain north & west, Jan 25 - 09:56

Fairly mild south, cooler north Periods of wind and rain spread off the Atlantic throughout the week ahead. Occasional cooler air moving across northern Britain brings the risk of transient falls of snow to Scottish hills. Otherwise, temperatures will range from mild to near average across the south. Thursday 28/01/16 A chilly start, with a slight frost in sheltered rural areas. A bright day, with a good deal of sunshine for much of England & Wales. The Midlands, south & east should stay largely dry. Showers are likely in the north & west of Britain and Ireland, perhaps merging into longer periods of rain through the day, heaviest in western Scotland, snow over the Highlands. Brisk west to south-westerly winds will feel cool. Temperatures 6 to 9C.

Friday 29/01/16 Low pressure to the north of Scotland brings the risk of westerly gales to northern Britain. Frequent rain across western Scotland and Northern Ireland. Showers for western parts of England and Wales, merging to persistent rain on western hills. Drier and brighter overall toward central and south-eastern Britain, although breezy. Highs 7C in north, to 11C south.

Saturday 30/01/16 Fronts move across the country, bringing rain to most areas during the day, heaviest in the west. Brighter skies may develop as cooler air follows from the north-west, but a risk of snow showers developing across Scotland, mainly over hills, but may fall to low levels for a time. Blustery westerly winds. Cool in north at 5C, highs 9C in south.

Sunday 31/01/16 Some uncertainty about detail, but another Atlantic frontal system is likely to advance across the country. Rain spreads eastwards, persistent for a few hours, may fall as snow over Scottish hills. Brisk winds. Generally mild in the south, cooler north, temperatures ranging from 6 to 12C. Monday 01/02/16 Cool westerly winds bring a changeable and showery outlook to the north & west, with pulses of snow showers likely becoming widespread across northern Scotland. Drier across southern Britain, and fairly mild. Highs 6 to 11C. Tuesday 02/02/16 Similar trends, cool and showery in the north, wintry over northern hills. Drier and milder in the south. Highs 5 to 9C.
