Week ahead: Return to winter - Hill snow Apr 22 - 08:17

Colder weather for all with showers or rain at times, snow on hills A fall in temperatures is underway and the cold weather is now going to be dominant through the coming week or so. A northerly wind bringing bands of showers and rain south through the UK and Ireland, mostly in northern and eastern areas. The rain falling as snow on the hills of Scotland and northern England as well as north Wales. Frosty nights are likely too.

For the weather for the next few days click here Monday 25/4/16 An area of low pressure is expected to be drifting southwards through the North Sea bringing cloud and bands of showers southwards on Monday. The rain and showers mostly in the north and east and falling as snow on the hills here. Western parts seeing a few showers, but some sunny spells here as well. Feeling cold in the wind, which could touch gale force in eastern areas. Tops near 4 to 12C.

Tuesday 26/4/16 Low pressure remains to the east with higher pressure to the west on Tuesday. Showers affecting many northern, western and eastern coasts, but drier and brighter where protected from the winds. Decent sunny spells in those drier areas too. Showers falling as snow on the hills of Wales, northern England and Scotland. Windy too with a risk of gales in the north. Highs near 5 to 9C.

Wednesday 27/4/16 Little change on Wednesday with low pressure remaining to the east and higher pressure to the west. Bands of showers moving south in the northerly flow bringing wintry showers on hills. Tops at 5 to 12C.

Thursday 28/4/16 Low pressure is going to be centred to the northeast of the Scotland through Thursday, with an area of high pressure to the west. Staying chilly with showers, most in more eastern and northern areas, these again falling as sleet and snow on hills. Highs at 3 to 11C.

Friday 29/4/16 Low pressure to the north of Scotland on Friday. The northwest flow continues ot feed showers across the country, some of them heavy at times and wintry on northern hills and coasts. Drier and brighter to the south where pressure may build. Highs at 4 to 11C. Saturday 30/4/16 A weak ridge of high pressure may build on Saturday. This is likely to be bringing some drier weather with sunny spells, although showers continue in the north and east. Highs near 6 to 12C.
