Week ahead: Cold start to 2017 - Briefly milder before New Year, Dec 27 - 09:33

Rain for many on New Year's Day; snow later north High pressure will dominate the rest of December, bringing extensive fair weather. Dense fog during the next few days in central regions. Rain spreads from the north-west by the weekend, followed by colder air and snow showers later on New Year's Day and on Monday. Hard frosts are likely early next week. Friday 30/12/16 Fair weather for central & southern Britain. Some lingering fog patches, but a good deal of sunshine toward the east & south-east. Cloud is likely to thicken for the west & north-west. Rain turns persistent for western Scotland, and Northern Ireland may become increasingly damp. A south-westerly breeze in the north, but light winds in the south. Generally mild, highs 6 to 11C.

New Year's Eve 31/12/16 A slow-moving front is likely to reside across Scotland & Northern Ireland, sinking slowly south, bringing persistent rain, heaviest for the West Highlands. Much of England & Wales should stay dry with some sun, although cloud thickens from the north. A freshening south-westerly wind, strongest in the north. Mild overall, 7 to 12C.

New Year's Day 01/01/17 A cold front is likely to pass southwards during the night and into New Year's Day, bringing rain for a time, which may only reach the far south later in the day. Colder air follows from the north, and showers will turn increasingly wintry over the hills. Some sunshine developing. A cool north-westerly wind. Highs 3 to 8C.

Monday 02/01/17 A chilly northerly breeze is likely. Most inland and central regions should be dry with plenty of bright sunshine. Wintry showers are likely around some coasts, mainly in the east & north. Pressure builds toward the north-west. Highs 2 to 6C. Tuesday 03/01/17 Expect a widespread hard frost in the morning, and a chilly day to follow. Many places may be dry with lots of bright sunshine. Some fog patches. Highs 2 to 5C. Wednesday 04/01/17 High pressure across the country maintains fine and frosty weather. Fog may form overnight, and in some places persist much of the day. Highs 3 to 7C.
