Thursday 29/12/16 High pressure centred to the south-east of Britain maintains fair weather for much of the country. Plenty of sunshine, but fog patches in low-lying central areas may be slow to clear. Light winds for most, but a fresher south-westerly breeze affects Scotland & Northern Ireland, bringing thicker cloud, and a little rain to the West Highlands. Temperatures between 3 and 9C, coolest where fog lingers, mildest in far south-west.

Friday 30/12/16 Fair weather continues for central & southern Britain. Some lingering fog patches, but a good deal of sunshine toward the east & south-east. Cloud is likely to thicken for the west & north-west. Rain turns persistent for western Scotland, and Northern Ireland may become increasingly damp. A south-westerly breeze in the north, but light winds in the south. Generally mild, highs 6 to 11C.

New Year's Eve 31/12/16 A slow-moving front is likely to reside across Scotland & Northern Ireland, sinking slowly south, bringing persistent rain, heaviest for the West Highlands. Much of England & Wales should stay dry with some sun, although cloud thickens from the north. Some fog patches in the south. A freshening south-westerly wind for northern England, but light winds in the south. Mild overall, 7 to 12C.

New Year's Day 01/01/17 A cold front is likely to pass southwards during the night and into New Year's Day, bringing rain for a time, which may only reach the far south later in the day. Colder air follows from the north, and showers will turn increasingly wintry over the hills. Some sunshine developing. A cool north-westerly wind. Highs 3 to 8C. Monday 02/01/17 A chilly northerly breeze is likely. Most inland and central regions should be dry with plenty of bright sunshine. Tuesday 03/01/17 Expect a widespread hard frost in the morning, and a chilly day to follow. A few wintry showers, but many places may be dry with lots of bright sunshine. Highs 2 to 5C.
