Mesoscale Discussion 0061
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0153 PM CST Mon Jan 16 2017
Areas affected...Southern MN...west-central WI...northern IA
Concerning...Freezing rain
Valid 161953Z - 170100Z
SUMMARY...Freezing rain coverage will gradually increase over the
next several hours. While precipitation rates are generally expected
to be light, some areas may briefly see rates over 0.05"/hour.
DISCUSSION...Large area of light to moderate precipitation
associated with the deformation zone of the maturing cyclone
centered over KS will continue to gradually shift northward into an
airmass characterized by surface temperatures in the upper 20s and
low 30s. Despite some modest surface warming resulting from latent
heat release and/or sensible heat fluxes associated with liquid
precipitation, temperatures are largely expected to hold below
freezing. As a result, the coverage of freezing rain is expected to
increase across the region. Freezing rain rates will generally be
light, but may briefly exceed 0.05"/hr, particularly in the area of
increased warm-air advection and deformation nearest the dry slot.
