Week ahead: Blast of winter on the way - Mild into mid week, Jan 08 - 10:30

Increasing risk of wintry showers Much of this upcoming week will be unsettled. We expect the mild conditions to give way to much colder temperatures from Thursday as Arctic air spreads south to bring a risk of wintry showers. Strong winds will also produce a significant wind chill. For the weather for the next few days click here Wednesday 11/01/17 Windy with gales across northern Britain. Gusts to 75 mph to affect the north of Scotland and the Northern Isles. Dry across England and Wales. Colder across Scotland with wintry showers to lower levels. A cold, windy night with a risk of snow showers across Northern Ireland, western Scotland and north west England. Expect high temperatures of 4 to 9C.

Thursday 12/01/17 Cold and windy with temperatures dropping to below normal - feeling even colder in strong north west winds. Many areas will be dry with sunny spells but there will be a scattering of snow showers towards the north and west with a few possible into southern England. Mainly dry, windy and cold overnight with some icy patches possible. Highs of 1 to 6C.

Friday 13/01/17 It continues cold and windy with a significant wind chill. Expect lots of sunshine inland while wintry showers may affect western and eastern coasts of Britain. A band of snow showers may affect northern Scotland. Overnight and area of rain may be preceded by snow as it moves into Wales and south west England. A bitterly cold night across the north. Highs of 1 to 5C.

Saturday 14/01/17 Staying wintry and very cold into Saturday. An area of rain in the far south of England may try to push a bit further north and as it runs into very cold air, it could turn to snow across central England and Wales, although confidence is very low at this point. Dry and sunnier to the north. Dry overnight with a widespread and locally severe frost. Icy patches may be found in the south. Highs of -2 to 4C.

Sunday 15/01/17 It remains cold with below normal temperatures. Some sleet and wet snow is possible in places, but again confidence in the detail is very low. Milder air may push into the west overnight as it becomes wet and windy with south west winds. Highs of 0 to 6C. Monday 16/01/17 Milder and windy with outbreaks of heavy rain into Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England. This may be precede by hill snow. To the sough it looks dry with the coldest temperatures. Expect highs of 4 to 8C.
