MD 0168 CONCERNING HEAVY SNOW FOR PARTS OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND AND COASTAL MAINE
MD 0168 Image

Mesoscale Discussion 0168
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0215 PM CST Thu Feb 09 2017

Areas affected...Parts of southern New England and coastal Maine

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 092015Z - 100215Z

SUMMARY...Bands of heavy, convectively enhanced snowfall (and
occasional blizzard conditions) will continue through 00Z in
southern New England. Beyond that, areas of heavier snow will
develop northward very near coastal Maine, with increasing snowfall
rates with time.

DISCUSSION...A persistent band of snow remains located from near
Boston Metro to near Providence, RI currently. This band is
associated with strong mid-level frontogenetic forcing, which
continues to increase partially in response to a strengthening
low-level cyclone south of Long Island. This band has been making
slow, but steady eastward progress with time, and convective
elements have locally enhanced snowfall rates to as high as 3+
inches per hour in spots. Heavy snow has also developed east of
this band across eastern Massachusetts. Northerly surface gusts to
35 mph have also resulted in occasional blizzard conditions,
especially across southern New England and Long Island.

With time, the band is expected to move eastward and clear most of
eastern Massachusetts by 00Z. The axis of strongest frontogenesis
will shift northward, with an attendant increase of snowfall rates
in or very near land areas of coastal Maine. High-res models vary
some on the placement of this band, although rates exceeding 1 inch
per hour should develop with time across far southern Maine, with
heavier rates expected into Downeast Maine (northeast of Augusta)
after 02Z.
