Mesoscale Discussion 0251
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0554 PM CST Wed Mar 01 2017
Areas affected...Parts of central and northern Georgia southwest
into southeast Mississippi
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 60...
Valid 012354Z - 020200Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 60
continues.
SUMMARY...Risk for strong/locally severe storms within the ongoing
band of frontal convection continues. Though risk should begin to
gradually diminish with time, potential for locally damaging winds
and hail will continue, particularly within WW 60.
DISCUSSION...Latest radar loop shows a broken band of showers and
thunderstorms extending from southeast Virginia southwest to
south-central Louisiana. The storms are ongoing near/ahead of the
steadily advancing cold front, which continues to progress through a
modestly unstable but very strongly sheared pre-frontal environment.
With the loss of diurnal heating, weak/gradual low-level
stabilization is expected, which -- combined with a forecast/gradual
decrease in low-level flow -- should result in a lessening of severe
risk over the next several hours. Meanwhile however, the
environment remains supportive of isolated severe risk in the
shorter term, as locally stronger/organized cells persist at this
hour within the broader band of convection.
