Mesoscale Discussion 0305
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0647 PM CDT Tue Mar 21 2017
Areas affected...central SC and parts of east-central GA
Concerning...Severe potential...Severe Thunderstorm Watch likely
Valid 212347Z - 220045Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...95 percent
SUMMARY...An increasing risk for hail and wind damage is expected as
the thunderstorm activity over the southern Appalachians and
northeast GA moves downstream into the Savannah River Valley and the
SC Piedmont.
DISCUSSION...Radar mosaic shows a congealing of storms in northeast
GA as additional storms form on the upstream side of the
thunderstorm cluster near the greater Athens, GA vicinity. It
remains unclear how this cluster may evolve and possibly move into
McCormick county, SC and Lincoln county, GA. A risk for localized
wind damage and hail may accompany this activity as it approaches
this area after 0030-0100z.
Farther northwest over the southern Appalachians, a mature squall
line with a well-developed MCV/comma head will continue moving
east-southeast. The squall line will likely approach the eastern
edge of severe thunderstorm watch 76 after 0200z. A lingering wind
damage risk is possible with the squall line as it moves through the
SC Piedmont and Savannah River Valley. Diurnal cooling of the
boundary layer lends some question as to the coverage of wind
damage. Current thinking is at least some localized threat for wind
damage will exist and probably necessitate the need for a new severe
thunderstorm watch this evening to the east of the ongoing severe
thunderstorm watch.
