Mild and wet into Christmas, then cooler next week A mild run up to Christmas is now underway. It will be mostly dry through this week, although always a fair amount of cloud and the risk of some drizzle in the west. By Christmas conditions my become wetter in western Scotland, northern England and Ireland and we do need to be on the lookout for a risk of some localised flooding here. Boxing Day could be wet too with the threat of some snow over high ground to the north.
For the weather for the next few days click here Saturday 23/12/17 Pressure remains high toward the south on Saturday. A west to southwesterly breeze is likely to freshen, especially across northern areas. Fronts move into western Scotland bringing some rain. Low cloud and drizzle near western coasts elsewhere. Most central and eastern places dry. Best of the sun towards the east if high ground. Fairly mild, 8 to 12C, highest temperatures in the east.
Christmas Eve 24/12/17 Fronts move in from the Atlantic as pressure falls. A risk of heavy and prolonged rain affecting the north-west of Britain & Ireland. Central and south-eastern regions should stay dry, with a little weak sunshine in the east. Murky in the south-west, with patchy drizzle. Brisk southwesterly winds. Generally mild, 7 to 12C.
Christmas Day 25/12/17 Heavy bursts of rain on Christmas morning across Scotland, northern England, Wales and eastern Ireland. Breezy to the east but drier. Colder in the rest of Scotland and Ireland with a few showers here, driven by low pressure the the northwest. The afternoon sees the heavier rain spread eastwards through the rest of England and Wales. Turning cooler and brighter to the north and west although still with showers in western Scotland and western Ireland. Highs at 12C in southeast England, 3 to 5C in Scotland, Ireland, northern England and Wales.
Boxing Day 26/12/17 Another batch of wet and windy weather is expected to spread from the south-west as a deep area of low pressure approaches from the Atlantic. A risk of gales in the west and we need to be aware of a snow risk in northern England and Northern Ireland, although confidence is low. Colder and brighter in Scotland with some wintry showers. Highs at 7C in southern England, 2 to 4C in Scotland and northern England.
Wednesday 27/12/17 Low pressure passes to the east on Wednesday with a northerly flow then developing. There will be some early wintry precipitation in eastern areas with showers following to the north and west. These showers will be wintry. Highs at 2 to 5C. Thursday 28/12/17 Low pressure brings cloud and some outbreaks of rain across much of the UK and Ireland on Thursday. More southern and western areas will be drier but rather cloudy. Some sleet could affect northern hills at first. Highs at 3 to 6C.
