Mesoscale Discussion 0013
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1200 AM CST Mon Jan 08 2018
Areas affected...Portions of far eastern IN...much of OH...and
northern KY
Concerning...Freezing rain
Valid 080600Z - 081200Z
SUMMARY...Freezing rain will spread eastward overnight, with rates
of at least 0.05 inch per 3 hours likely. A transition to
light/moderate snow should eventually occur for most areas.
DISCUSSION...A light to moderate precipitation shield will move
eastward across eastern IN, much of OH, and parts of northern KY
overnight in association with a shortwave trough over the MS Valley.
Based off of upstream observations across IN and due to low-level
warm air advection across this region, freezing rain should be the
primary initial precipitation type. 06Z surface temperatures across
most of OH are cooler than IN owing to a residual cold/dry low-level
airmass. Surface wet bulb temperatures should remain below freezing
across much of this area through 12Z. Freezing rain rates of 0.05
inch per 3 hours have been observed at several locations across
IL/IN earlier this evening. Rates of at least this level are
expected across OH due to the colder low-level airmass in place.
Across northern KY, surface temperatures are somewhat warmer
(generally in the mid/upper 30s), but cold ground temperatures
should still allow for some freezing rain potential. A transition to
light/moderate snow may occur on the western periphery of the
precipitation shield as low/mid-level temperatures cool.
