Week ahead: Warm, mostly dry south - Fresher, some rain north/west, Jul 19 - 13:18

Heat and humidity building through week A general south to south-westerly airflow during the week ahead is likely to see temperatures climb into the 30s Celsius, possibly the hottest spell of the year, with the very highest temperatures likely later in the week. Fresher in the north & west early in the week, with a risk of some rain. As humidity builds, there's an increasing threat of thunderstorms toward the end of July. Sunday 22/07/18 Fronts moving close to north-western Britain & Ireland bring cloudy skies and some rain or drizzle, chiefly affecting western Scotland, accompanied by a fresh southwesterly breeze. For much of the country, it will be a dry and warm day with good amounts of sunshine. A light west to northwesterly breeze for England & Wales. Temperatures ranging from 18 to 21C in the north & west, up to 26 to 29C in central-southern England.

Monday 23/07/18 Southern and central parts of Britain remain dry with a good amount of sunshine, although western areas will tend to be cloudier. Fronts draped across Scotland and Northern Ireland result in mostly cloudy skies here, with outbreaks of rain or drizzle at times, focused over western hills. A southwesterly breeze, strongest in the north and west. Just 17 to 20C in the far north-west, but much hotter in the Midlands and south, 27 to 30C.

Tuesday 24/07/18 Weakening fronts are expected to influence the north and west, bringing cloudy skies and a little rain or a few local showery bursts. Dry, mostly sunny and very warm for much of central & south-eastern Britain. A west to southwesterly breeze. Feeling humid in the south. Temperatures ranging from near 20C or below in the north & west, up to 30C in the south-east.

Wednesday 25/07/18 High pressure resides across England & Wales, maintaining hot and dry weather here. Fronts continue to influence the north & west, bringing a risk of some rain for Ireland and western parts of Scotland, although detail very uncertain. A similar spread of temperatures from north-west to south-east, 19 to 30C. Thursday 26/07/18 Temperatures may rise further later in the week, becoming more widely hot and humid. Chance of local thundery rain, but many places should be dry with sunshine. Into the low 20s Celsius for northern regions, but the south is likely to top 30C. Friday 27/07/18 Scope for very hot temperatures, but a risk of local thunderstorms, perhaps breaking out more widely heading into the weekend. Highs 25 to 33C, hottest in the south-east.
