MD 0038 CONCERNING HEAVY SNOW FOR CHICAGOLAND
MD 0038 Image

Mesoscale Discussion 0038
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1113 PM CST Sat Jan 19 2019

Areas affected...Chicagoland

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 200513Z - 200915Z

SUMMARY...Localized snowfall rates exceeding 1" per hour are
possible during the next several hours.

DISCUSSION...A narrow but well-defined band of moderate to
occasionally heavy snow continues to advect into Chicagoland.
Overall pattern responsible for the development of this band (i.e.
convergent surface winds over the lake, shallow layer of cold air,
steep low-level lapse rates) is expected to persist for at least the
next several hours. Some slow eastward movement of the band is
possible as the axis of convergence shifts eastward, but most of
guidance suggests this movement is slow enough to keep the band
focused within this relatively localized area for at least the next
several hours. Snowfall rates are generally expected to be below 1"
per hour but very localized and/or brief instances of rates
exceeding 1" per hour are possible.
