Mesoscale Discussion 0803
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0637 PM CDT Wed Jun 03 2020
Areas affected...southeast Iowa into northern Missouri and
west/central Illinois
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 245...
Valid 032337Z - 040130Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 245
continues.
SUMMARY...Storms are expected to increase in coverage this evening
within, and north of, WW 245. Localized damaging wind and hail are
expected, and another watch could become necessary.
DISCUSSION...Very strong instability remains in place over the
region, south of a stationary front from southern IA into central
IL. Little air mass has been overturned thus far, with only
isolated, southwestward-moving cells northwest of the STL area.
However, an isolated cell does exist near DVN near the instability
axis, and is nearly stationary.
Modest southwest flow in the low-levels will continue an influx of
moist/unstable air across the area. Outflow from the northeast MO
cells, along with weak convergence near the larger scale front, may
focus additional development this evening. Weak westerlies aloft and
southwesterly surface winds should favor south to southeastward
propagating storms capable of localized damaging downbursts. The
strongest storms may produce hail as instability is quite strong.
