Mesoscale Discussion 1409
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0712 PM CDT Wed Aug 05 2020

Areas affected...Northeast/East-Central CO...Northwest KS

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 419...

Valid 060012Z - 060145Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 419
continues.

SUMMARY...Convective trends are being monitored for possible watch
issuance across northwest KS.

DISCUSSION...Recent radar imagery shows an increased in
thunderstorms Yuma County CO, ahead of the approaching convective
line moving through Washington County CO. This convective line
recently produced a 55 kt gust at AKO, and will begin interacting
with the storms out ahead of it soon. As it does, there is some
potential for the linear system to accelerate, resulting in an
increased potential for strong wind gusts across Yuma County CO and
potential into northwest KS. However, the low-level air mass will
become increasingly stable over the next few hours, leading to
uncertainty regarding the eastern extent of the severe threat. In
contrast, steep mid-level lapse rates and a strengthening low-level
jet could allow the line to persist across much of northwest KS.
Convective trends are being monitored closely and there is some
potential a small downstream watch may be needed across northwest
KS.
