Mesoscale Discussion 1695 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0414 AM CDT Wed Sep 16 2020 Areas affected...Florida Panhandle...Far Southern Alabama Concerning...Tornado Watch 490... Valid 160914Z - 161115Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 490 continues. SUMMARY...A tornado threat will continue through daybreak from far southern Alabama eastward across the Florida Panhandle into far southwest Georgia. A new tornado watch will need to be issued before the 11Z expiration of WW 0489. DISCUSSION...Hurricane Sally's center is currently about 10 miles to the south of Gulf Shores, Alabama. The hurricane will continue to move slowly northward with an expected landfall around 10Z. Bands of heavy rainfall are present to the north and east of the center extending eastward about 150 statute miles. The most notable band is located in Santa Rosa County, Florida extending south-southeastward into the northeast Gulf of Mexico. Multiple semi-discrete thunderstorms are ongoing within this band. Other discrete cells are ongoing over land to the southwest of Tallahassee. Some of the storms are supercells. The latest WSR-88D VWP at Eglin Air Force Base shows veering of winds with height in the lowest 3 km above ground level. This is supporting storm-relative helicity in the 350 to 400 m2/s2 range, which will be favorable for tornadoes associated with the stronger rotating storms. The tornado threat will be maintained along the coast through mid morning with some slight inland shift possible. For this reason, a new tornado watch will need to be issued by the 11Z expiration of tornado watch 0489. ..Broyles/Edwards.. 09/16/2020 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...
