Week ahead: High pressure dominates - Overcast & foggy, Dec 31 - 10:29

Mainly dry, some frost and fog developing The first week of January will see a very settled spell of weather, with the strongest area of high pressure seen for several years likely to develop across the British Isles. Beneath this high there is a risk of extensive and stubborn fog. Temperatures will be cooler than of late with a greater risk of frosty mornings.

For the weather for the next few days click here Thursday 03/01/19 A strong high pressure area is centred over southern England. The day will start cold with a widespread groundfrost for Scotland, England and Wales. It will be a dry day for all but cloudy in the north. Brighter skies are expected over the southern half of the country though some patches of fog may persist in low-lying areas. Winds will be light. High temperatures at 3 to 6C, but staying colder where fog lingers.

Friday 04/01/19 Little change, with high pressure dominant - the high staying centred over southern Britain. England and Wales will have a cold, frosty start to the day but it will be milder further north as a weak front brings breezy and wet conditions to the north of Scotland. Persistent fog remains a risk for England and Wales as winds will stay light there. Highs at 3 to 8C, cooler where fog persists.

Saturday 05/01/19 High pressure remains in charge bringing another mixed but settled day of weather. Some bright spells will develop for the southwest however southeastern England may see some thicker cloud and rain developing through the day. Persistent fog continues to be a risk for many areas. Highs at 6 to 9C.

Sunday 06/01/19 Another day of high pressure keeping the weather fairly settled. Light winds and dry for all with variable amounts of cloud. Fog perhaps lingering for the Midlands and southwest. Highs at 4 to 8C.

Monday 07/01/19 A weak front may graze the northwest of Scotland bringing some light rain for a time. High pressure dominating elsewhere. Dry but overcast for the southern half of Scotland and the rest of the UK and Ireland. High temperatures if 5 to 8C. Tuesday 08/01/19 Another weak front may pass to the north of Scotland but high pressure seems likely to remain dominant. A cloudy day with some light rain in the northwest. Best of the sun in the southwest. Highs at 5 to 9C.
