Areas affected...Texas Panhandle

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 470...

Valid 300138Z - 300245Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 470
continues.

SUMMARY...Corridor of enhanced damaging wind potential is emerging
across the eastern Texas Panhandle.

DISCUSSION...Recent scans on KAMA radar show strong velocity values
(e.g., exceeding 80 kt at 300 ft AGL) with a storm that developed
northwest of AMA and is tracking through northern and northeast
sides of the metro area. This storm has produced estimated 60-70 mph
winds and 1.5-2 inch hail. The 00z AMA sounding indicates nearly
1200 J/kg of DCAPE and steep low-level lapse rates, supporting the
damaging wind potential, in addition to ambient 35 kt of effective
shear colocated with a compact mid-level short-wave trough to
support persistent storm organization. Thus, as this storm continues
eastward, upscale growth appears possible with a threat for damaging
winds.
