Week ahead: Rain, showers & mild - Quieter Christmas?, Dec 18 - 11:45

Unsettled, wet and windy at times, perhaps quieter at Christmas Unsettled conditions through the rest of this week. Low pressure will be passing from west to east bringing bands of rain and showers with them. Rain could be heavy on Friday with a risk of severe gales in the south. Indications for Christmas are that it may become a little quieter as higher pressure briefly builds allowing for some mist, fog and frost, although confidence is low.

For the weather for the next few days click here Friday 21/12/18 Low pressure remains to the west of Scotland on Friday. Fronts push eastwards bringing heavy rain with them to much of Ireland in the morning, then through Wales, England, central and southern Scotland. Gale frce winds affecting all but central and northern Scotland, the threat of severe gales to the south. Brighter Skies with sunshine and showers following from the west. Highs at 11C in southern England, 5C in northern Scotland.

Saturday 22/12/18 Low pressure close to northern Scotland on Saturday. This brings a southwest flow through all parts of the UK and Ireland. Scattered showers in western and southern areas with a fair amount of cloud. More persistent rain may affect western Scotland. Brighter in the east. Highs at 7 to 10C.

Sunday 23/12/18 Low pressure crosses the UK and Ireland on Sunday. This brings heavy periods of rain with it, most over the south of the UK and Ireland. Scotland probably seeing less rain. Highs at 5C in northern Scotland, 12C in southern England.

Christmas Eve Low pressure may clear east on Christmas Eve. It is likely to become brighter with sunny spells and will feel cooler too. A scattering of showers may affect northern and western coasts as any early rain clears the east. Highs at 5 to 8C.

Christmas Day Much uncertainty in the weather for Christmas Day. It may be that the day is drier overall, perhaps with a morning frost and some fog patches. These clearing to leave some bright spells. The risk of some low cloud and drizzle affecting northern and western Scotland. Highs at 4 to 9C. Boxing Day Higher pressure may bring a morning frost and some fog again on Boxing Day, although confidence is low again. There may be some lower cloud and drizzle aorund the coasts. Highs at 4 to 8C.
